 La Ferme du Príeuré

Yesterday we had to go to collect the duck we had ordered from La Ferme du Prieuré, which is just beyond the outskirts of Amboise. The address is Pocé-sur-Cisse but La Ferme is well south of the main village and it has almost been swallowed up by the industrial zone of greater Amboise. The duck was very flavoursome and worth the journey.

Château d'Amboise – winter repairs + BD@Chinon: 20/21 March

La Nouvelle République today has a report on the various repairs and work being done on the Château of Amboise, taking advantage of the fact that there are fewer visitors around in the winter months.

'La basse saison touristique est le meilleur moment pour réaliser des travaux. Le château d'Amboise bruisse du travail des ouvriers, entre jardin et remparts.

Les grands échafaudages qui s'élèvent sur le côté sud, au-dessus de la ville, sont révélateurs de l'importance des moyens techniques nécessaires quand il faut réparer, rénover, consolider, sur un édifice comme un château royal. La restauration des remparts sud est en cours d'achèvement.'

The work involves replacing defective stones in the ramparts, work on the gardens as well as improving fire security. Improvements include making parts of the château more accessible to people with reduced mobility and to small children. Work has been going on for six months at a cost of 370,000€.

Also a festival of comic strips (BD – bande dessinée) at Chinon this weekend (17th edition): Saturday afternoon and all Sunday.

A 2007 Montlouis and a 2009 Touraine Sauvignon

2007 Mémoire de Loire, Montlouis, Closerie de Chanteloup

As an interlude between the reports on the big France under one roof tasting here are notes on a couple of samples I have been intending to try for a while. The Closerie boys were over for France's independent wine producers tasting in January, while the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc from Jean-Christophe Mandard came from the Salon des Vins de Loire.

Closerie de Chanteloup
This Montlouis comes from a 22-hectare domaine sited close to the famous Pagoda de Chanteloup on the outskirts of Amboise. The domaine used to be part of an estate owned by the Duc de Choiseul, a prime minister during the reign of Louis XV. The domaine is run now by three producers: Vincent Guichard, Frédéric Plou and Willy Debenne. Five generations of the Guichard family have run the domaine. In 2003 Vincent took over a small part of the family vines along with some others that he rented, making a total of six hectares. In December 2005 he was joined by Frédéric Plou, who decided to leave the large Plou domaine of 60 hectares in Chargé to be involved in something smaller. (I have yet to be impressed by the Plou family wines.) Willie Debenne joined Vincent and Frédéricin Janauary 2007 leaving his job in industry.

2007 Mémoire de Loire, Montlouis, Closerie de Chanteloup
This lightly golden wine shows how good a demi-sec can be with its combination of minerality and quite austere, racy acidity – typical of the 2007 vintage – and peachy, honeyed sweetness and good length. Impressively good!

Previous postings on Closerie de Chanteloup here and here.

The Pagoda de Chanteloup

Jean-Christophe Mandard
2009 Cépage Sauvignon, Touraine, Jean-Christophe Mandard
This pale coloured wine is a decidedly lean, lemony, gooseberry and grassy example of a Touraine Sauvignon – 'bracing' or 'tonique' probably sums it up. This 2009 Sauvignon is not unripe; it doesn't have those reeky cats' pee aromas. I would prefer it to be a little riper with more complexity, although to be fair it is very young and may well take on more weight in bottle. There may also be later bottlings but on this showing I prefer Jean-Christophe's reds.

Vines  looking towards Château d'Amboise

Vign'amboisiennes'  donne une image au terroir

A report from La Nouvelle République on new efforts to make the local viticulture more visible in the populat tourist town of Amboise.

Finally...AC Saumur Le Puy Notre Dame!
Although the INAO accepted AC Saumur le Puy Notre Dame on 14th June 2006, it took a further three years and more for the French Minister of Agriculture to find his pen to sign the décret, which was done on 14th October 2009. Apparently the reform of the agrément system held things up.

The new AC is for reds only and covers 17 communes roughly centred on Le Puy Notre Dame. These are: Brézé, Brossay, Cizay la Madelaine, Distré, Doué la Fontaine, Epieds, Le Puy Notre Dame, Les Ulmes, Le Vauldenay, Les Vergers sur Layon, Meigné, Montreuil Bellay, Berrie, Les Trois Moutiers, Pouancay, Saix and Saint Léger de Monbrillais. The new appellation stretches nearly 30 kilometres from Doué la Fontaine in the west to Les Trois Moutiers in the east.

23 producers from the 17 communes covered by the AC will be making 3000 hls of the 2009 vintage, which will bear the new appellation. The late Henri Aupy started the campaign to get the appellation in 1975. Under the rules the base yield is 50 hl/ha, which is 20% less than that permitted for straight AC Saumur, with a maximum tolerance to 56hl/ha. Weedkiller can be used in part of the vineyard but not across the whole area. The wine cannot be put on the market before 1st June following the vintage. The producers are hoping that the wine will be priced between 6-10€ a bottle. (See l'anjou agricole (22.10.09).

CRM picking@Le Puy Notre Dame: 3rd October 2009

I don't want to make a big thing of this but it cannot surely be mere coincidence that Jim's Loire and friends spent half a morning picking Chenin Blanc (yes I know the new appellation is for red wine) at Le Puy Notre Dame on Saturday 3rd October and just eleven days later the new décret became official.

Foire aux Vins@Amboise

This morning we went to the annual Foire aux Vins at Amboise (11th-13th April), which is held in a tunnel under the château over the Easter weekend. Many years ago I went a couple of times but then there were no spittoons, so you had spit on the earthen floor and some of the growers treated you as a Martian for wanting to spit rather than drink. Also the wines were distinctly variable – some very good, others best left for the producers' close friends to enjoy. Notable that Damien Delecheneau, one of the stars of the appellation wasn't here.

It is good to report that the Foire is now much bigger than it was with various stands outside selling food, clothes etc. The wine tasting is still in the tunnel under the château but it has been much improved with a proper floor and all the stands have spittoons even if some of them are tucked away on a shelf behind the stand. Now this is altogether a much more pleasant experience. Doubtless the standard of the wines have improved – certainly many of the labels are much more modern – but there remain big variations in quality. Inevitable I guess when you have some producers who export and have a significant area of vines, while others are much smaller and sell everything locally.

I worked my way along the tunnel tasting the reds and returned tasting Chenin Blanc sec and demi-sec. Tasting Chenin Blanc is always a good test of quality. Here Chenin Blanc has the Touraine-Amboise appellation, while Sauvignon Blanc can only be labelled Touraine. Whether the consumer distinguishes between Touraine and Touraine-Amboise or even cares is quite another matter. Unfortunately I tasted a number of old fashioned rustic Chenins not entirely clean – some with the famous wet dog character that has all too often given Chenin Blanc a bad name. Some were clean but dilute. Fortunately there were some good examples. It is perhaps not surprising that Amboise is about the furthest east in the Loire where Chenin will ripen properly.

There was also a considerable variation amongst the reds, which ranged from being rustic and mean to polished examples with some concentration. One of two had had that piercing and unpleasant green pepper character. The Cuvée François I is the popular, easy drinking, entry level wine – a blend of Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Côt. The proportion varies from year to year and from vigneron to vigneron but for most producers Gamay makes up around 50% or more. Their more serious cuvée tends to be a a blend of Cabernet Franc and Côt.

Unfortunately wine temperatures were not ideal for tasting as the ambient temperature kept the reds a fraction too cool emphasising the tannins and many of the whites were much too cold.

François Pequin, Domaine des Bessons

My picks of the Foire:

François and Brigitte Pequin, Domaine des Bessons, Limeray
New discovery for me – was particularly impressed the whites. Vineyards are grassed over.
Best red: 2005 François I – 40% Côt, 40% Cabernet Franc, 20% Gamay – being 2005 this had more weight and structure than most of the other François I shown at the Foire, which tended to be 2007s.
Best white: 2008 Les Silex Sec with 7 gms of residual sugar – precise, mineral style, length. Picked by hand.

Xavier Frissant, Mosnes
Long one of the leading, newer generation of Touraine Amboise producers
Best red: 2006 Renaissance, Touraine-Amboise – 50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Côt aged one year in 50 hl foudres. More successful at the moment than an identical blend – 2006 L'Orée des Frênes, which is aged in barrique for a year, where the wood is currently over dominant.
Best white: 2007 Délice des Frênes, demi-sec, Touraine-Amboise – lightly floral, clean and precise, delicacy. Vinified and aged in 400 litre barrels.

Lionel Truet, Domaine de la Grande Foucardière, Saint-Ouen-les-Vignes
I enjoyed and was impressed with Lionel's wines when I first tasted them years ago and I bought a few, some of which were subsequently disappointing – but that was many years ago. His wines showed well again today.
Best reds: 2007 Gamay, AC Touraine – floral and juicy; 2006 Clos du Vau, 50% Côt, 50% Cabernet Franc – good concentration of black fruits and length.
Best white: 2004 Cuvée Juliette – spends 12 months in barrique after fermentation in vat. Clean, some wood spice and fair length. Surprised this is not also fermented in barrique to get better wood integration.

Séverine Tancrez

Worth following up
Séverine and Pierre Emmanuel Tancrez, Domaine Tancrez
Although I found the Tancrez wines variable, worth following up if only because as Séverine explained their wines were declassified in 2007 because it was there was too much grass and weeds in their vineyards to qualify for appellation status. If there weren't other factors involved then this is truly preposterous! Has anyone ever been denied the appellation because they blitzed their vineyards with weedkillers? Producers adopting an organic approach should be encouraged by the wine authorites not hindered.

Séverine et sa fille

They have 15 ha of vines at Cangey – just to the east of Limeray. Their first vintage was 2004. I tasted the 2004 François I, which was not a success – rooty and fierce aromas of vegetal green peppers. Not an easy vintage for a début! In contrast 2005 Vendémiare Touraine-Amboise moelleux was not more the business – 13.5% alcohol and 122 gms of residual.

Closerie de Chanteloup

Chez Bruno

Three vignerons decided merge and work together in 2007. They have 22 ha of vines 9including three in Montlouis at Lussault) and they also own the wine bar Chez Bruno, which is just opposite the Château of Amboise. Of the three reds that I tasted, the most convincing was 2007 Les Douves – 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Côt and vines of 50 years old. 50% of this cuvée spends six to eight months in 400 litre barrels. Unfortunately by the time I got back to this stand the producer had gone to lunch and it wasn't possible to taste their Chenin.

Also noted
Jacques et Gilles Dutertre, Domaine Dutertre, Limeray
Substantial producer of 37 ha making pleasant middle of the road wines.

•••

Boulangerie Emmanuel Godineau
Following the tasting we bought some quiche, paté de Paques and an apple tart from the Godineau stand in the Place Michel Debré. All were excellent. Godineau is based in Saint-Patrice, at the beginning of the Bourgueil appellation to the west of Tours. You'll find them at the monthly marché gourmand in Tours (Place de la Resistance) on the first Friday of every month from 16.00-22.00.

Construction underway of Autoroute A85 (now open) between Epeigné-les-Bois and Saint-Georges-sur-Cher

Brief report in La Nouvelle Republique today about L'association Bien Vivre à Nazelles-Négron, a suburb of of Amboise, whose members are seeking more information about the projected new autoroute that would by-pass Tours and be designed to relieve the heavy traffic on the existing A10 as it passes through Tours. At busy times, especially during the heavy summer weekends, the autoroute around Tours can turn into one large traffic jam. Apparently three possible routes close to Amboise, north and south, are being considered.

Further information here about a possible A110 autoroute running roughly parallel to the A10 starting around Chartres and heading past Vendôme. For some reason I can't make this link to the French version of Wikipedia work properly. The url is fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoroute_française_A110

Now back in the UK after three weeks in the Loire following the 2008 harvest. There still remain some quick harvest reports to write, which I hope to do this week plus bring reports of the continuing harvest.

Despite a favourable forecast for today in Touraine, the weather sprang a surprise with some rain from around 9.30 am. However, I don’t think it rained very much and is unlikely to be any significant difference to quality. The weather forecast over the next week is generally favourable, with some rain possible in the middle of the week.

On the journey back we left the rain behind around Le Mans and enjoyed a wonderfully sunny day with magnificent autumnal colours in northern France and on the drive back to London. The Channel Tunnel was quiet and we managed to get on a train leaving nearly 90 minutes before our scheduled crossing.

Domaine de la Butte, Bourgueil. Mi Pente is the middle part of
the sloping vineyard above the house and chai.

Inspired by our visit to see the Taile aux Loups harvest in Montlouis, last night we opened a bottle of Jacky Blot’s Mi Pente 2003 Bourgueil, Domaine de la Butte. The 2003 has also shown well and it continues to do so – rich, ripe fruit without being Porty and still with a freshness in the finish that marks this out as a Loire red despite the 2003 heat wave. I'm confident that the 2003 Mi Pente, the top wine from Domaine de la Butte, will last another 10 years at the very least.

Today’s Nouvelle République reports that there has been a change of chef at the one-starred Michelin Château du Pray in Charge just to the east of Amboise. Gérard Dehaye, who has had a varied career including financial communication and who has worked with chefs Michel Guérard, Michel Bras and Didier Oudill, has replaced Ludovic Laurenty. Although it is a while since I have eaten there it has an imposing dining room overlooking the Loire and a good wine list.
