A release from Bourgueil:

'20 vignerons et 20 artistes se sont rencontrés ce samedi 1er octobre et ce dimanche 2 octobre à Bourgueil à l'invitation de Ludovic et Sophie Ragot, les hôtes du Café de la Promenade à Bourgueil.

Près de 500 personnes ont participé à cette cure de bien-vivre, à l'occasion des rencontres avec les artistes et vignerons dans les chais, de la dégustation de vins de Bourgueil organisée au Café de la Promenade, ou de la vente aux enchères qui a clôturé ces journées.

Le jury a récompensé :

Premier prix : Julien Casse, http://thepostmanquartet.free.fr/, (voir photo en pièce jointe) dont l'œuvre, qui servira d'affiche à l'édition 2012, a été acquise par les vignerons de Bourgueil pour 460 €


Deuxième Prix : Dany Sabourin, www.dany-ds.fr

Troisième prix : Valerie Lenders, www.valerielenders.be, venue tout spécialement de Belgique pour l'occasion

Le jury a également remis un prix spécial à Jeanne Ragot, 10 ans, qui avait tenu à réaliser 2 œuvres vendues au prodfit des Restos du Cœur. A cette occasion, le jury a fait une entorse au réglement : alors que les lauréats sont repartis avec des bouteilles de vins de Bourgueil,
Jeanne a remporté 6 bouteilles de jus de raisin de cabernet franc produit sur l'appellation Bourgueil !

Conduite par maître Chabert, huissier à Chinon, la vente aux enchères permettra de remettre aux Restos du Cœur de Bourgueil un chèque de plus de 3 500 €.

Grand renom indeed, but how many wine lovers can honestly claim to know and understand the Loire valleys most widely recognized red wine appellation? Superficially, it’s straightforward enough; a single classification based on Cabernet Franc, vinified both as red and rosé, and bolstered by a token amount of Chenin Blanc planted in many instances for cynical commerciality rather than any inherent cohesion with the region's soils. Unfortunately, for this commentator at least, Chinon is both a confusing and confused appellation, in desperate need of a shake-up....'

Generous bunch of Cabernet Franc in a Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil vineyard on the gravel

Despite some rain in September the Cabernet Franc looks for the moment to be resisting rot in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. Picking is at different stages in the three appellations. The vineyards on the gravel and sandy flats of Saint-Nicolas have now been largely picked often by machine. Despite reports of rot in these vineyards the grapes that remained looked healthy and there appeared by be very little rot about. Bourgueil is now underway – some started at the end of last week while others waited until Monday. In Chinon some have started on the reds, while others like Baudry-Dutour and Couly-Dutheil are picking for rosé this week and will start on the reds at the beginning of next week. Others, like Nicolas Grosbois and Bertrand Couly, are picking the reds now. 

For the white Chinon, Baudry-Dutour have picked their domaine white but waiting to pick for their barrel fermented Chinon Blanc. Couly-Dutheil are picking their most fragile parcels of Chenin.
