When I went to collect the bread this morning at Le Lézard Vert (Epeigné-les-Bois) I was warned by the three habitués, who take their coffee in the bar every morning, to say nothing about a football match played last night apparently between Mexico and France.

Le Lézard Vert, Epeigné-les-Bois' café where the licence is owned by the communeLa Nouvelle République has a report today on the problems faced by cafés in Indre-et-Loire as in many of France's other départments. The smoking ban has apparently made things more difficult.
'Nombreux sont les cafés à tirer le rideau dans le département. A la campagne, mais aussi en ville. La fin de la cigarette au comptoir a accéléré leur disparition.
État des lieux. Difficile d'évaluer le nombre de fermetures récentes de cafés en Indre-et-Loire, notamment parce que les propriétaires de licence IV peuvent la conserver trois ans après avoir baissé le rideau. A Tours, on compte 414 débits de boissons, et aucune création n'est possible (le quota d'un établissement pour 450 habitants est atteint). Les transferts sont possibles depuis une autre commune ; le dernier en date concerne un établissement installé aux Deux-Lions.'
One way of helping to save cafés, especially in small villages, is for the commune to buy the licence.
