Severe hail damage in Sauternes

Hail damage in Monthou, Cher Valley 2009

'Un violent orage de grêle détruit le Sauternes
Un violent orage de grêle a fortement touché le vignoble de Sauternes, qui produit des vins liquoreux d'excellence, touchant "au moins 40% de l'appellation", a-t-on appris mercredi auprès des responsables de châteaux classés grands crus qui évoquent des "ravages".'

A violent hailstorm hit Sauternes early evening on Monday. The communes of Bommes and Sauternes were particularly affected. Hail can be very destructive. Parts of the Cher Valley, Sancerre and Menetou-Salon were very badly affected by hail in 2009. Fortunately hail is usually quite localised but those affected can lose virtually their whole crop.

See video of damage here on Bill Blatch's Bordeaux Gold.

Now at the end of April the threat of frost is lessening in the Loire, while the danger of hail increases especially as the vines are so in advance of normal this year. We had a little bit of hail last Sunday in Epeigné but as far as I know not enough to do any real damage.

Picking in Sancerre (Chez Vincent Grall) September 2009

On Thursday 30th March there was the opportunity to taste 56 Sauvignon Blancs (all 2010s) from the Central vineyards with examples from Coteaux du Giennois, Reuilly, Quincy, Menetou-Salon, Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre. The wines weren't selected, rather it was down to the producers to decide whether they wanted to enter their wines into this tasting. The tasting was held at The Sampler in London's South Kensington.

Overall these 2010s emphasised the difference between this year and 2009 with the 10s leaner, considerably less rich and opulent. This is a more classic Loire vintage with lower alcohol levels but higher acidity. Many of these wines had only recently been bottled so were quite tight and I expect they will take on some more weight over the next few months.

Coteaux du Giennois

Of the five Giennois on show, this crisp and lemony wine from Domaine de Montbenoît (Sainte-Gemme) was my preferred wine with Rivotte from Domaine Poupat et Fils (Rivotte) as the runner-up.

**
Quincy

The soft, quite spicy and weighty Domaine Trotereau (Quincy) was my preferred wine from 10  Quincys shown followed by Les Vignes d'Adèle, Domaine Adèle Rouzé (Quincy) and Domaine Vincent Siret-Courtaud (Lunery). Vincent Siret-Courtaudis promising young vigneron, whose wine I first tasted at this year's Salon des Vins de Loire. Vincent also has vines in Châteaumeillant and is not the only vigneron in Quincy to have holdings in both appellations. He is joined by Nicolas Lecomte (Domaine Lecomte) and Domaine Roux.

Menetou-Salon
Although there were only six wines presented from this appellation it had my highest hit rate of the six ACs in this tasting. Two stood out – the grassy and goosebery Domaine Chavet (Menetou-Salon) and the weighty and well balanced Domaine de Châtenoy (Menetou-Salon) followed by Cave Gilbon (Soulangis) and Domaine Pellé (Morogues).

Followed by:

Pouilly-Fumé
Out of the ten examples from Pouilly-Fumé, one stood out – the floral and long flavoured Harmonie from Domaine Chatelain (Saint-Andelain) with the Domaine Cédrick Bardin as runner-up.

Sancerre
Since this is easily the largest appellation it was hardly a surprise that Sancerre supplied 21 wines. My preferred wines were: Les Chasseignes, Domaine Claude Riffault ((Sury-en-Vaux); Vin d'Homme, Dionysia (Auguste Natter in Montigny); Les Classiques, Domaine Henry Natter (Montigny); Domaine Yves et Pierre Martin (Chavignol); Origine, Domaine Matthias et Emile Roblin (Mainbray); and L'Authentique, Domaine Thomas-Labaille (Chavignol).

Close behind were Domaine Daniel Crochet (Bué) and Tradition from Domaine Bernard Fleuriet et Fils (Menetou-Ratel).

Reuilly
None of the three Reuillys shown really stood out. The quite lean and minerally La Raie from Domaine Lafond being the best.

2010 Loire vintage: Pierre Jacolin, Menetou-Salon

Broken down picking machine: one of the hazards of the vintage!

On our way back from Pouilly-sur-Loire on 5th October we dropped in to see Pierre Jacolin at Le Prieurié de Saint-Cérols (AC Menetou-Salon). Although the weather that Tuesday was pretty miserable, Pierre was reasonably happy. For a start he had a normal harvest in 2010 – very important after the series of hailstorms that hit Menetou in 2009.

Pierre: "We started on Thursday 30th September. Half the crop is now in with the Pinot Noir nearly finished. Yields for both the Pinot and Sauvignon Blanc are around 60 hl/ha with potential alcohol around 12%-12.5%."
The juice of both varieties tasted clean and fruity – like everywhere else in the Loire no false flavours. We left Pierre to get on to see how the mechanics were doing with his picking machine. Fortunately he wasn't picking that day.

We drank this 2007 Menetou-Salon selected by Foucher Lebrun (part of the Picard group) during a dinner with friends on Friday night. It showed well with the typical cleanness and purity of the 2007 but with enough weight of steely fruit to stop it from being lean.

A couple of inhabitants of Menetou-Salon enjoying a glass of the local wine

From the BIVC:

2009 Menetou-Salon Rouge, Chavet Fils

Attractive bottle of 2009 Menetou Salon Rouge from Chavet Fils – lightish and fresh Pinot Noir and soft enough to drink as an aperitif. Or to enjoy when it is young and lightly chilled especially in summer. Cellar cool if you have a suitable cellar. This was one of three 2009 red Menetou-Salons in the recent tasting organised for me by the Bureau du Centre Loire.

 Pinot Noir: Sancerre 2008

Friday morning I tasted a number of reds from Menetou-Salon, Reuilly and Sancerre: 7 from Reuilly, 10 from Menetou-Salon and 25 from Sancerre – mainly 2008s with a few 2009s.

Next week I plan to write the two tastings up in more detail but now a couple of observations. Firstly there was not one screwcapped bottle amongst the 168 wines I tasted. Given the take up of screwcapped bottles in many other wine areas, especially Australia and New Zealand, especially with Sauvignon Blanc, it is extraordinary that there wasn't a single example.

Secondly it was also evident from the tasting, perhaps especially in tannic vintages like 2008, that producers have two choices when making Pinot Noir into a red. Either they make a very light wine with a very short maceration, concentrating on the fruit with a light structure and little tannin or if they want to make a more concentrated, structured wine then it needs to be aged with wood to soften out the tannins. This was particularly noticeable tasting the red Sancerres. Of the 25 wines presented 13 had no oak aging, while the rest were aged for a time in wood. Almost of the unwooded wines had quite harsh dry tannins, even when initially they had attractive fruit. In contrast those aged in wood had much softer, more integrated tannins and structure with a higher success rate.

A day in Sancerre

A picnic in the middle of Menetou-Salon

Firstly, apologies that there wasn't another post yesterday. Unfortunately my best efforts were undone by a firewall where we were staying.

Driving over to Sancerre we came off the motorway at Vierzon and headed across country via Menetou-Salon and Morogues, stopping in Menetou for a couple of photos. It is noticeable, coming from the west to Menetou, you come through apple and pear country. Apart from one vineyard in the town, the vines don't appear to start until the eastern side of the town. Weatherwise a magnificent day.

Le Bric au Broc

We had a very good and reasonably priced lunch in the bistro section of La Côte des Mont Damnés. Two courses for 8.50€, three for 11.90€.The lunch menu yesterday was: quiche aux poireaux, navarin d’agneau and chanciaux aux pommes.

In the afternoon we had the tasting of 2009 whites – Pouilly-Fumé, Quincy and Sancerre. 126 wines in total 15 from Quincy, 41 Pouilly-Fumé and 70 Sancerre. I will write this up more detail over the next few days but of the three appellations I found Quincy to be the most consistent, although not the most interesting. I was more impressed with Pouilly-Fumé than usual. There were some very good Sancerres but also some that are currently suffering from being over-ripe with a lack of freshness.

Looking over Les Loges to La Loire

After the tasting we did a quick visit to Pouilly to take some photos in the vineyards.

Vines above Les Loges and La Loire

In the evening we went to a Franco-Dutch evening at La Maison des Sancerre. The town of Sancerre is twinned with Markelo in Holland and there are a number of Dutch people who have had a long connection with the Sancerre region. Some have bought houses in the town. It was a lovely warm evening so we were able to eat and drink outside overlooking the old quarter of Sancerre and the vineyards.

Vines above the village of Thésée beside the River Cher

Further reports from the big French wine tasting on Wednesday

Domaine le Haut Chesneau, Thésée, AC Touraine
I first tasted wines from this domaine in January last year at a tasting in Vinopolis. The wines are now imported into the UK by Charles Hawkins & Partners Ltd. Tasting with Charles on Wednesday confirmed my impression from last year that the whites from this domaine are their better suit. I tasted their mineral 2008 Sauvignon de Touraine (retailing around £7.75 and closed with a screwcap). Although this has some length I think it is worth paying a £1 more for the 2008 Vieilles Vignes (RSP £8.75), which has greater complexity, lemony weight and attractive minerality.

I also tasted their fresh and spicy 2009 Pineau d'Aunis Rosé before tasting, at Charles' urging, the 2008 Malbec d'Exception (£8.75), which is actually a blend of 60% Côt (Malbec) and 40% Cabernet Franc. Although better than the reds I tasted at Vinopolis a year ago, this is still work in progress – still too many green notes, although there is some concentration here. Is it a question of reducing the yields or just picking a little later – making sure you have flavour ripeness?

2009 Montlouis Sec, Domaine de la Rochepinal, Hervé Denis
Imported into the UK by O/Moore & Co Ltd in Dorking, Hervé Denis is not a name I have come acroos before. His website explains that he started in 1989 with just over 2 hectares of rented vines – 1.94 ha of  Chenin and 0.38 of Gamay. He now has 15.04 ha that includes I was told 10 ha of Montlouis – the rest is Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. 50% of his production goes to the Montlouis cooperative. 1995 was his first true vintage. The 2009 sec from 80 year old vines is pretty lean at the moment – truly a sec. I expected more character from such old vines but it may be a stage it is going through.

2009 Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, Château du Coing de St Fiacre
A couple of promising 2009 samples tasted on Withers Agencies Ltd from this fine Muscadet estate. Pointless saying more at the monent as the wines haven't yet been bottled except that I preferred the more vibrant, mineral sample.

2008 vintage: Pierre Jacolin in his winery at Saint-Cérols

2009 Menetou-Salon, Le Prieuré de Saint-Cérols, Pierre Jacolin
Sadly, due to the sucession of hailstorms that hit AC Mentetou-Salon devastating the crop, this is going to be a rare bottle – a lovely combination of grassiness, gooseberry and grapefruit with the weight of 2009. Pierre stays in the same hotel in centre of Angers for the annual Salon de Vins de Loire. I'm impressed by his wines but somehow I don;'t always get to taste them during the Salon.  I guess there are just too many exhibitors and you have to learn that you can't taste everything.

However, if you are on road from Bourges to Sancerre and want a stop to taste some good Menetou-Salon before crossing into Sancerre, stop in Saint-Cérols and taste Pierre Jacolin's wines.

Part 3 to follow.
Part 1 here.

The Bunch – once there were 'eight' – now there are five

Jason Yapp (Yapp Brothers) one of the founder members of the Bunch

I went to the Bunch tasting today. The Bunch is a grouping of some of England's most distinguished independent wine merchants – the Blue Ribands of the sector with at least two companies with Royal Warrants and one of these chaired by the Clerk of the Royal Cellars. Founded some ten or 12 years ago they have now rather shrunken in number – starting with eight merchants* there are now down to just five. The founders members of the Bunch were: Adnams, Armits, Berry Bros & Rudd, Corney & Barrow, Lay & Wheeler, Laytons, Tanners and Yapp Brothers. A key criteria for membership is that the companies are independent.

It's only too easy to imagine what Agatha Christie would have made of this – a tale set over a long weekend in a stately home with the eight merchants meeting up for a jovial weekend. Initially there are eight places set round a magnificent oblong table but soon one chair disappears, then another followed by another. Uneasy glances around the table – who will go next............?

Laytons were the first to go – bought by Jeroboams. Next, in 2008, Armit sold out to the Dutch Baarsma Wine Group. This year Majestic snapped up the ailing Lay & Wheeler.

Le Roi du Rhône: John Livingstone-Learmonth

I'm delighted that John Livingstone-Learmonth (http://www.drinkrhone.com/) has graciously agreed to supply odds on who will occupy that last chair around the dining-table, who will go next and, who, the Butch might recruit if they decide to make up their numbers. Indeed it is understood that The Bunch are looking to recruit new members. "The wheels are in motion," commented Jason Yapp. Deservedly known as King Rhône, John is also a nonpareil when it comes to his mastery when setting odds – the likes of Magic Meg of Penge are but distant substitutes. Further details will be posted as soon as I have them from the Monarch of the Turf.

* Unfortunately this is incorrect as I have been rightly reminded by Jason Yapp (see below). There have only ever been seven members maximum at any one time. However, pleading artistic licence on behalf of Agatha, the table will continue to be set for eight.

Jason Yapp: 'At the risk of qualifying for Pedants Corner I must point out that the Bunch has never had 8 concurrent members.

The orginal [magnificent?] 7 were:

Adnams, Armit, Corney & Barrow, Lay & Wheeler, Laytons, Tanners and Yapp.

When Laytons was sold (around 2000) we dropped to 6 and then BBR joined in, I think, 2002 taking us up to 7 again.

Then Armit withdrew their membership and we dropped back to 6 where we remained until Lay & Wheeler were bought by Majestic earlier in the year.

We were never 8 because that’s too many people to share a decent bottle of wine. That said I am hopeful that we will recruit a 6th member not least because logistically it’s a much better number if ever we colloborate on a mixed case offer.

••

While we wait for John's deliberations, here are details of the two Loire wines shown at the today's tasting.

2008 Menetou-Salon Blanc, Domaine Teiller

Yapp Brothers showed the 2008 white Menetou-Salon from Domaine Teiller (£11.95), which was very typical 2008 – strong mineral character, very precise but with some palate concentration and good length.

2008 Touraine Sauvignon 'Terroirs des Vignerons', Paul Buisse

The other Loire white, no red Loires were shown, was put up by Adnams – the crisp and crunchy 2008 Touraine Sauvignon 'Terroirs des Vignerons' from Paul Buisse (£6.99) with a slightly catty nose and gooseberry flavours, clean length with a touch of greenness in the finish. Interestingly different in style to the Menetou-Salon – one for those who like a slightly aggressive and assertive edge to their Sauvignon Blanc. My preference was for the Menetou but it is another £5.
