Busby Perkins + Will is all geared up to give Canada its first living building. Called the “VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre”, the building will be a reflection of sustainability, architectural proficiency and contemporary style. But, the living building certification doesn’t come that easily, the designer will have to use zero net energy and water for one year, in addition to fulfilling many other requirements.

The new $19.4-million center will incorporate green features like a rammed earth base, an extensive green roof, a solar chimney for hot air release, rainwater catchment with black water and stormwater recycling. Built to LEED Platinum standards, this beautiful structure will consist of a classroom space, a restaurant and gift shop.

The extensive solar photovoltaic system installed on the grass-covered roof and a biomass boiler running on deadfall and other debris from the grounds will generate enough energy to power the center. The building that is expected to be landmark structure for Canada when completed in March 2011.
