We have already seen countless projects that aim at raising recycling awareness, but this time around two students at the Savannah College of Art and Design give the world a recycling awareness center. Marie-Alice Kacou and Khanh Do have designed a skyscraper for Raleigh, North Carolina that will help to educate people about recycling and sustainable development in terms of material reuse and water efficiency in the city. The mixed-use high rise building is a place where the urban transition, the edge condition, and the human interaction interact and generate interaction.
Aiming at finding new ways to utilize domestic metal and plastic waste, the project encourages encourage innovation while integrating successful sustainable techniques to create a recycling machine. The skin of the structure features the solar water disinfection, a system that filters rainwater using the sun’s rays and stores it for harvesting purposes. The collected water is released using natural gravity and directed to designated tanks located on every 10th floor throughout the building to optimize pumping energy. Rainwater harvesting will also be practiced on the roof of the skyscraper. The project starts with interpretation of the universal symbol of recycling and ends on the ultimate recycling center.
